sorry I won't make the AGM

Hi - I'm sorry that for various reasons - including sickness and death [neither mine] I can't make the AGM. Hope it goes well - I'll miss tucking into the shared lunch. Hope to have more time for gardening and associated activities in the near future.

Food for the Future

I recommend this BBC2 programme to all BOG members.

Hawick Rugby Club's Green Event - 7th March

A few weeks ago I was talked into taking a stall for BOG at this event, to be held at Hawick RFC's ground in Mansfield Road, Hawick on Saturday 7th March. If you missed Potato Day on Sunday you have a second chance to buy some seed potatoes, as I have 10 varieties that didn't sell out and I will be selling them on the BOG stand.

In addition to the Hawick v Melrose game,  there will be an interesting range of side shows in the Green Village.

Land available near Hawick

I have  0.5Ha of arable land near to the Orchard dairy just outside Hawick and wondered if anyone would be interested in using it for growing veg or keeping stock. There is planning on it for a pole barn which i haven't yet built and it has vehicle access. Its only been used for grazing a few sheep for the past few years and is surrounded by new fencing, hedgerows and trees.

Red squirrel as regular visitor

For the last couple of weeks a red squirrel has been a regular visitor to the peanut feeders in the garden. An attempt at a window hung feeder resulted in a very undignified fall from grace, which hasn't been repeated! As I was keen to keep the feeders in reasonable condition we've been putting nuts and other food out loose in the woodshed for the squirrel, and have had some splendid views of him eating quarered apple, hazelnuts in their shells and quantities of peanuts. The visit never lasts more than about half an hour, so other gardens are probably being visited as well.

where can I get farm manure from?

I am getting my garden redone - it's extremely heavy clay with no organic matter in the soil at all. I have been told that well rotted farm/horse manure would be good to help break the clay up - does any one know where I could get some? Annie at the Walled Garden nuirsery said it should be at least 6 years old, and a minimun of 3 years old otherwise it will be too concentrated in clumps still. I live in Denholm - near Hawick.

Thanks for suggestions,

 Monica
